It's March so it's Women's History Month!
The month is created to observe the extraordinary legacy of women in American history according to the celebratory month's website.
Here at BroadwayBox, we are thrilled to celebrate the dynamic, exceptional and talented women who have graced the stages on Broadway. This month, we will be looking back at decades worth of musicals and the singular performances by the year that stopped us in our tracks.
We're starting with the 2010's!
2010 - "Model Behavior" performed by Laura Benanti (from Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown)
Who could forget Laura's hysterical phone call with Pepa. Why WOULD there be a raisin on the floor if Candela never liked raisins!?
2011 - "Ev'ry Night At 7" performed by Jessie Mueller (from On a Clear Day You Can See Forever)
Following a successful career in The Windy City, Jessie made a splash on the Broadway scene opposite Harry Connick, Jr. singing this jazzy tune.
2012 - "Summertime" performed by Audra McDonald (from The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess)
Absolutely stunning. Audra soars as Bess earning a Tony Award for her divine performance both heartwrenching and captivating.
2013 - "Magic To Do" performed by Patina Miller (from Pippin)
The moment Patina flourishes through the curtain to the strains of "Magic to Do"'s opening chords? Superstar status!
2014 - "Always Starting Over" performed by Idina Menzel (from If/Then)
Idina back on Broadway right after letting it gooooo as Elsa in Disney's animated blockbuster Frozen. What a thrilling number!
2015 - "I'm Here" performed by Cynthia Erivo (from The Color Purple)
Cynthia performing this number has lived rent free in our head since 2015. Gives us goosebumps!
2016 - "If You Knew My Story" performed by Carmen Cusack (from Bright Star)
Carmen was remarkable in her Broadway debut as Alice Murphy in this Steve Martin/Edie Brickell musical. We can't stop thinking about this performance.
2017 - "I'd Give My Life For You" performed by Eva Noblezada (from Miss Saigon)
Speaking of Broadway debuts! Following her memorable Ghost finalist performance at the Jimmy Awards and run as Kim in London's West End, Eva wowed Broadway in Miss Saigon's revival.
2018 - "It's Not About Me" performed by Beth Leavel (from The Prom)
Oh Beth Leavel, we aren't worthy! The original Dee Dee Allen in this extraordinary musical. We could have picked "The Lady's Improving" too but this was Dee Dee's first tune.
2019 - "River Deep, Mountain High" performed by Adrienne Warren (from Tina)
Adrienne Warren soared to the Broadway stratosphere when she brought her scintillating performance as Ms. Tina Turner to Broadway. This song? Push play.
