There are shows at Feinstein’s/54 Below that go beyond concert and become full-on theatrical events in New York—The Jonathan Larson Project
is one of those shows. In the clip above, Nick Blaemire (who gave an incredible performance as Jonathan in tick...tick…BOOM!) performs “One Of These Days”, a cut song from Larson’s 1985 musical Superbia. This is one standout number in an evening of standout numbers—think of it like 54’s version of a home run derby. Below read the annotated note from the program that Jennifer Ashley Tepper (who also conceived and directed the show) wrote about this number. For over six years, Jonathan worked tirelessly on his futuristic dystopian original musical Superbia. It never received a full production, but it did receive readings and workshops, including at both Playwrights Horizons and The Public Theater, and win Jonathan “promising writer” accolades and awards. He rewrote Superbia endlessly and sent it to every producer and theater and person in power you can imagine.
“One of These Days” was the original I Want Song for the protagonist, Josh Out, in early versions of the show. Josh Out is an imaginative inventor who is obsessed with finding objects from the old world and bring them back to life—a total freak and danger to Superbia society.
The Jonathan Larson Project runs at Feinstein’s/54 Below through October 14.
