Manhattan Concert Productions came out with the devilishly great news that on Valentine's Day 2021, they will be bringing the Frank Wildhorn 1997 classic musical Jekyll & Hyde to Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall as part of their yearly concerts.
The show, with the New York Chamber Orchestra, will be directed by Tony Yazbeck who had recently appeared in its presentation of Crazy for You as Bobby Child opposite Laura Osnes' Polly. It was a Frank Wildhorn musical swap as Jekyll & Hyde replaces the previously announced The Civil War.
The Frank Wildhorn score to Jekyll & Hyde has some truly incredible showstopping songs for women, contradictory of the show's title character(s). That said, we are focusing today on a little number sung to the heavens by the role of Lucy in the second act. We can't imagine the wonderful Broadway songstresses going in to audition for this part and totally look forward to finding out the cast soon!
After much YouTube surfing, we are counting down the 10 ultimate "A New Life" covers. The performances are out of this planet good so prepare yourself!
10. Samantha Pauly
SIX's Katherine Howard donned a blonde wig during her daily home quarantine covers. This star's range is beyond.
9. Jackie Burns
This Wicked and If/Then vet lent her powerhouse vocals to the Wildhorn tune sounding gorgeous as ever.
8. Keala Settle
When The Greatest Showman superstar begins this classic, she is so delicate and so honest. This performance was such a great showcase for the range of her talent.
7. Coleen Sexton
Crystal clear vocals here by Ms. Sexton in her Broadway debut. We love Lucy's determination!
6. Liza Minnelli
Friends, we were today years old when we found out that this existed. In classic Liza fashion, she acts the heck out of the song with every single lyric. The richness in Liza's voice is so glorious.
5. Deborah Cox
Deborah played Lucy in the most recent Broadway revival of the show. Talk about passion! What a gift to hear her magnificent voice sing these songs.
4. Kate Shindle
Yes, the current President of the Actors' Equity Association is a Lucy that is out of this world. She made her Broadway debut in the original production understudying Lucy.
3. Diana DeGarmo
Wow, okay. Completely nailing the acting, the vocals, the whole thing. Her marvelous big Broadway vocals throughout? Wow, are we grateful that this Idol alum danced over to musical theatre.
2. Amina Faye
The 2016 Jimmy Award Winner blew us away and took the second spot on our list. We can't wait until she takes on Broadway. The last few bars of the song are beyond.
1. Linda Eder
Original Broadway Cast Lucy, Ms. Linda Eder, is our number one version. Her voice is magic - that's the only way to describe it. We love how hopeful her performance is, totally vulnerable and finding her truth by the end of the song.
