BroadwayBox recently caught up with the star-studded cast leading the big Broadway revival of You Can’t Take It With You, and we decided to have a little fun with the gang.
First a little set up: Kaufman and Hart’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic reaches its climax in Act II as the wildly different Sycamore and Kirby families come together for disastrous dinner party, and Penelope (Tony nominee Kristine Nielsen) suggests they play a little free association game with the words potato, bathroom, lust, honeymoon and sex. So BroadwayBox decided we would play the same game, using the same exact words with the cast and here’s how each of them responded:
Rose Byrne (Alice Sycamore)
“Yum, pretty, fun, Hawaii and awesome.”
Elizabeth Ashley (The Grand Duchess Olga)
“White, makeup, sweaty, travel and worthwhile.”
Annaleigh Ashford (Essie Carmichael)
“Po-tah-to, poop, “poop” or Amazon.com, Disney World and Michael Sheen & Lizzy Caplan at 10 o’clock on Sunday nights on Showtime.”
Fran Kranz (Tony Kirby)
“Meat, Scope (weird, I don’t even own Scope), sex, Spencer (that’s my girlfriend’s name) and yikes.”
Mark Linn-Baker (Paul Sycamore)
“French fries, toothpaste, yes, yes and YES.”
Kristine Nielsen (Penelope Sycamore)
“Gravy, not now, rent, fantastic, and need it more.”
Johanna Day (Mrs. Kirby)
“Butter, shower, fantastic, avoided and love it.”
Julie Halston (Gay Wellington)
“Starch, me, me, me and me.”
Reg Rogers (Boris Kolenkhov)
“Boiled, piss, love, Vegas and more.”
Crystal A. Dickinson (Rheba)
“Meat, fart, desire, love and good.”
Marc Damon Johnson (Donald)
“Sprout, clean, yummy, fun and all the time.”
Joe Tapper (G-Man)
“Fries, time, yes please, haven’t had one yet and yay.”
Patrick Kerr (Mr. De Pinna)
“Dad, tile, life, divorce and please.”
You Can’t Take It With You begins performances at the Longacre Theatre on August 26.
