4/13/20 UPDATE: This special Disney live stream concert will now be Friday April 17th at 7pm EST. Set a reminder!
Calling all Fansies!
This Monday, April 13th at 7pm, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS will be live streaming the concert Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway to support Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS' COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund. Frozen's Ryan McCartan, will be hosting the live stream (at his home) which will be available on the Facebook and YouTube pages for the organization as well as their official site.
Last November, the concert, included 79 performers from Disney's illustrious roster of shows such as Christian Borle (Mary Poppins), Kerry Butler (Beauty and the Beast), Gavin Creel (Mary Poppins), Susan Egan (Beauty and the Beast), James Monroe Iglehart (Aladdin), Adam Pascal (Aida), Sherie Rene Scott (The Little Mermaid, Aida) and many many more. We're especially alerting Newsies fans because 18 cast members from the show's Broadway and national touring productions reunited for a special performance with Tony nominee Ashley Park which you won't want to miss!
We're looking back at 5 memorable videos of the Original Broadway Cast of Newsies from Paper Mill to Broadway. One of our very own Broadway Celebrates Oz stars Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Crutchie) was instrumental in giving Fansies a sneak peek into the process of Newsies during its Broadway run with exclusive videos in the rehearsal studio and backstage.

Here's an exclusive look at the Newsies sitzprobe where the company heard the show's exhilirating orchestrations for the first time. Watch as they tap danced through "King Of New York" and cheered each other on throughout this orchestra run. We love from 1:29 - 1:43 as you can feel the energy and excitement during "Once and For All." You'll get goosebumps when you hear Jeremy Jordan's Jack Kelly sing from 2:00 - 2:16.
Disney's NEWSIES at Paper Mill Playhouse - "Patrick's Mom," a NEWSIES Thank You
If you know the 1992 film, there was a pivotal moment in "Carrying The Banner" where about three minutes in, a woman walked onto the scene looking for her son Patrick. She not only walked into the scene but she high belted with vibrato about it. This musical interlude was not included in the musical version however the cast knew how beloved the moment was. With an assist from outstanding ensemble member Julie Foldesi, they recreated the moment outside of Paper Mill Playhouse. Our favorite is seeing the newsies try not to laugh during filming.
Disney's NEWSIES on Broadway - First Day at the Nederlander Theatre
Watch what happened when the cast saw their dressing rooms for the first time and discovered movie-like hidden fire escapes. You'll find Tommy Bracco, Jess LeProtto and Ryan Steele brainstorm on what they should name their dressing room (Dressing Room 10) from Danger Room to The Headline.
Disney's NEWSIES on Broadway - Backstage Rituals
This video is a funny one. The cast warmed up in unusual spaces throughout the dressing rooms. Ephraim Sykes' face says it all at 0:31. We also got to experience Ben Fankhauser's iconic belt with and without riffs which is a gift.
NEWSIES on Broadway - "Watch What Happens" Lip Sync
"And the World will know, and the Journal too" that this is one of the best videos of the backstage series. The delightful Kara Lindsay (Katharine Plumber) mentioned that she thought she had the hardest song in Newsies with "Watch What Happens." Aaron Albano, Tommy Bracco, Michael Fatica, Evan Kasprzak, Brenden Stimson and special guest Ryan Breslin accepted Kara's challenge to prove it was the wordiest and most difficult. We're just going to leave this here.
