Sparks are flying down at the Barrow Street Theatre and all because of the electrifying central performances of Susannah Flood and Carter Hudson in the award-winning drama The Effect

. Two patients in an antidepressant trial fall in love, and their story is sweet and sexy and wildly messed up. Seriously you'll be thinking about them long after the curtain falls.

Scroll on to get to know each of these gifted actors a bit better and get a glimpse at their dynamic relationship.

My first impression of my co-star was:

Susannah:
First impression of Carter was that he was shy and had a serious face.  (One of those things is still true.)

Carter:
She’s so Hollywood.

My favorite moment we share onstage in The Effect is:

Susannah:
Well, my true favorite moment is actually cut from the show...but currently, it's every time I catch him checking me out in the first scene.

Carter:
Susannah is an enthusiastic ad-libber. During rehearsals Cromer indulged it, but during tech he told her she wasn’t allowed to improvise anymore.  However, sometimes if I really throw her in a scene she just can’t help but go off-script.  Then she gives me a look that says, “Ah man, now I’m going to get in trouble.”  Then I know I’ve won.

The thing my co-star does that makes me laugh:

Susannah:
Everything. 93% - 95% of the time.

Carter:
Dramatic reenactments of cat videos from YouTube.

IRL, my co-star is more a rule follower or rule breaker:

Susannah:
Depends on the day.  And the rule.

Carter:
During her days driving in the Indy Racing League (IRL), Susannah had a notorious disregard for racing rules and safety regulations.

I think the best couple fight scene from a movie:

Susannah:
Liv Ullman and Erland Josephson in the fifth episode of Bergman's Scenes From A Marriage.  Also amazing: Teri Garr and Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie.

Carter:
Han and Leia, “I’d rather kiss a Wookie!”  “I can arrange that.  You could use a good kiss!”

Fictional couple who are totally #RelationshipGoals:

Susannah:
Jim & Pam.  Oh, and the heroes of a truly incredible book called Arundel, published in 1930 by Kenneth Roberts.  The central couple fall in love slowly over a long time because they remind each other of home ... I won't say more in case anybody out there loves historical fiction and decides to read it.

Carter:
Hmm.   Can I say Han and Leia again?  The Force Awakens notwithstanding, they look like they’re having a lot of fun.  God, I’m a nerd.

Most random thing/job I’ve ever done for extra cash has been:

Susannah:
Acting.

Carter:
This.

Most depressing song I can’t get enough of:

Susannah:
For the show, it's "Curse", by Vicktor Taiwo, but in my heart, there's always "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright".

Carter:
Currently, “Cleopatra” from the Lumineers’ new album.  About a former actress dying in a nursing home.  “I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life. But when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I’ll be on time.”  I mean . . . And yet, it’s agonizingly catchy.

I’m in awe of my co-star’s ability to:

Susannah:
Ignore me.  Do his job.  Often both at once.  I don't know how he does it!

Carter:
Be just exactly where she is.  With her head in the clouds and her feet planted in the core of the Earth.

If I had to describe my co-star in a song, it would be:

Susannah:
Any track the Tom Waits album Closing Time.

Carter:
She went to Berkeley, and I think of her as a Joni kind of girl.  I’m going to go with “A Case of You”.

Hurry over to the Barrow Street Theatre before June 19 to see Susannah Flood and Carter Hudson in The Effect.
