The Tony-winning Broadway musical Annie is heading back to the big screen in a new adaptation starring Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, Oscar winner Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. Meaning a new generation will get to know the optimistic little orphan, but is this generation getting the short end of the stick?
For ‘70s kids, Annie is fondly remembered as Andrea McArdle belting her sweet young face off and Dorothy Loudon giving everything you can give in a performance.
Of course, ‘80s kids really lucked out because we got the AMAZING movie adaptation with Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters and Ann Reinking (shhh, we were too young to see its flaws).
Kids in the ‘90s got Annie too, but their Miss Hannigan (Kathy Bates) wasn’t nearly drunk and funny enough. They did however get Audra McDonald, Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Victor Garber and the stage musical’s big showstopper “NYC,” so it almost worked out for them.
And now, today’s kids don’t even get Daddy Warbucks, they get Benjamin Stacks. Supporting characters Lily and Rooster also got the axe in the modern movie remake, but all hope is not entirely lost. The Annie trailer has been released, and we’ve found the eight moments that actually give us hope that indeed the sun will come out tomorrow and this Annie—though always fourth—could still be magical.
