If you are a musical theatre fan like us, we have a new virtual cabaret that deserves a watch!
Last week, Lyric Opera of Chicago released The New Classics: Songs from the New Golden Age of Musical Theater and it was an absolute gosh darn delight. Emmy and Grammy Nominee David Chase music directed the concert so thoughtfully and lovingly crafting an evening of songs featuring music from the song catalogs of all of your favorite composers. We're talking Jason Robert Brown, Ahrens & Flaherty, Stephen Schwartz, Jeanine Tesori, David Yazbek, Andrew Lippa and even more of musical theater's beloved songwriters.
Don't get us started on the performers! Starring in the cabaret are Tony and Olivier Award winner Gavin Creel, Company's Nikki Renée Daniels and Norm Lewis. When we tell you they are singing songs that are like an absolute highlight reel of all of the magic these Broadway stars exude in their performances, we are not kidding. Hearing Gavin absolutely soar on Jason Robert Brown and Adam Guettel heartwrenching showstoppers and then deliver an amazing cover of a popular Wicked tune - it's an absolute dream. Nikki absolutely dazzles with a multitude of fabulous numbers from The Secret Garden to Hamilton with her gorgeous soprano beautifully expressing each lyric. The range that Norm Lewis displays in this concert is awe-worthy. From Once On This Island to Les Misérables and an unexpected song from one of his fan favorite musicals Side Show is so brilliant. The cabaret also features truly glorious performances by Amanda Castro, Jenn Gambatese, Jo Lampert and Heath Saunders.
We don't want to spoil the song titles because it is hit after hit. If you're looking for a great evening of musical theatre be sure to catch it on Lyric Opera's Facebook and/or YouTube Channel through September 10, 2021!
