The creative team that rocked our world (and picked up some major awards) for the rock musical Next to Normal is back on Broadway this season with a brand-new, completely original musical If/Then. Tony and Pulitzer Prize Award winners Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's new musical, about how one small decision can completely alter a life’s path, is brimming with A-list Broadway talent. Below, BroadwayBox looks back on our favorite videos of these eight incredible all-stars.
LaChanze as Kate
A Tony Award winner for her starring role in The Color Purple, LaChanze has been giving us life and giving us chills since appearing as Ti Moune in Once On This Island.
Anthony Rapp as Lucas
Some things never change. Nearly 20 years later, Broadway star Anthony Rapp is back with his Rent director Michael Grief and still pining onstage for Idina Menzel.
Jenn Colella as Anne
Thanks to her big voice and comedic chops, Jenn Colella has walked away with the musicals Urban Cowboy, High Fidelity and, most recently, Chaplin. Here she is performing her Chaplin showstopper “All Falls Down.”
James Snyder as Josh
Confession: We fell for James Snyder after seeing his positively brilliant performance as Billy Bigelow at Goodspeed’s Carousel. However, to most Broadway audiences, this hunk is best known as the hip-swiveling title character of the musical Cry-Baby.
Jerry Dixon as Stephen
Jerry Dixon had leading roles in Broadway's Once On This Island (with If/Then co-star LaChanze)and Five Guys Named Moe. Yet if you are anything like us, you know Dixon best from your well-worn cast recording of off-Broadway’s Tick, Tick…Boom!.
Jason Tam as David
Jason Tam broke our hearts as Paul in the first Broadway revival of A Chorus Line. Just try not to get emotional while watching his take on the classic Paul monologue.
Tamika Lawrence as Elena
If/Then is the first principal role for Tamika Lawrence, who previously appeared in the ensemble of Matilda and The Book of Mormon.
Idina Menzel as Elizabeth
What is there to say about Idina Menzel? She nailed this year’s Oscar-winning song “Let It Go,” she was the original Maureen in Rent and she won a Tony Award as Broadway’s first Elphaba in Wicked. Now just take a moment to process that we owe this one woman for “Let It Go,” “Take Me or Leave Me” and “Defying Gravity.” (And just wait to see what she’s belting in If/Then!)
If/Then officially opens at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre on March 30.
