Lilla Crawford made her big screen debut opposite Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp and a big bunch of Tony winners and Tony nominees in Disney’s spectacular film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods.
The film marked Crawford’s second Lapine project—just prior to filming, she headlined his big Broadway revival of Annie. #MajorTonySnub
Below, BroadwayBox catches up with Crawford in anticipation of Into the Woods March 24 Blue-Ray & DVD release (get it while it’s hot!) to chat about the making of the film, set souvenirs and her life today.
1. Set memory I'll cherish forever:
When we were filming The Giant scene—it was a huge scene with nine people and it was so much fun. The whole time everyone was being silly and making jokes. It was like being in a comedy club. It literally got to the point where Rob Marshall would call action and we couldn't say our lines because we were laughing so hard. It’s something I'll never forget.
2. Scene in the movie that brings me the most joy to watch:
Actually, probably that one because, even though it's a really serious scene, all I can think about is how much fun I had filming it.
3. Coolest thing I kept from the set:
Well they didn't let me take home lots of stuff, but I do have the back of my chair which says Little Red Riding Hood. I really wish I could have taken the shoes I wore in the movie. I’m obsessed with those shoes.
4. The background of my cell phone:
It’s a purple flower. It’s a default setting that’s just on the phone.
5. Last TV show I binge watched:
There’s one on Netflix right now called Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and it’s kind of Broadway. I am obsessed with that show. I’m almost done with it and I just started it.
6. Sondheim role I’m dying to play someday:
Well, I love The Witch in Into the Woods. I’d love to play that someday. And anything in Follies; I love that show.
7. One thing I really want to do this summer:
Usually in the summer I just stay inside all day embracing not having to go to school, so I made a plan for myself to go outside everyday, even if it’s just to the park. I want to enjoy the sunshine. And also see a lot of Broadway shows.
8. Album I can't get enough of right now:
Well, they just came out with the Side Show album from the last revival and I’ve been listening to that a lot lately. I would love to play Daisy someday—I love Daisy.
9. Last person from Annie I saw:
One of my best friends is Sadie Sink (who is The Audience right now and the new NBC show American Odyssey) so we hang out all the time.
10. The go-to song in my book right now:
I love singing Scott Alan’s songs. He wrote this song “Never Neverland (Fly Away)” and I love that song. And I also sing “Watch Me Soar” from his 54 below concert.
11. Last time I laughed until I nearly cried:
Like everyday. Shout-out to the friends I was with on Halloween; we watched a YouTube video of a guy going down a slide and his scream was so weird and funny—it was the weirdest scream ever—and me and my friends were literally crying and suffocating on the floor from laughing.
12. The highlight of my day typically includes:
I do different things every day. My days are always different. Maybe eating food [laughs].
