Happy Birthday to Funny Girl, Fanny Brice!
The Ziegfeld Follies Principal performed "My Man" in the 1921 incarnation of the Follies singing against a lampost.
The life of vaudevillian Fanny Brice, star of film, radio, and the stage was musicalized for Broadway with Funny Girl. At the end of the original 1964 Broadway production of Funny Girl, the musical typically ended (before the "Don't Rain On My Parade (Reprise)") with the character of Fanny Brice singing "The Music That Makes Me Dance" as part of the brassy Jule Styne/Bob Merrill score. When it came time for Barbra Streisand to reprise her role as the funny girl herself in the 1968 film adaptation, "My Man" synonymous with Fanny Brice replaced "The Music That Makes Me Dance."
Phenomenal Barbra took the song to brand new excellent Streisand heights during the song's key change. Barbra reprised "My Man" on her "Live At The Forum" concert in 1972 as well as in future concerts for years to come. Around the time of the release of the Funny Girl film sequel Funny Lady, Barbra performed an out of this world "My Man" as part of the television special Funny Girl to Funny Lady. She also revisited "My Man" her outdoor concert event in Hyde Park.
