The Broadway bio-musical about the life of Fanny Brice, Funny Girl opened on this date in 1964 at the Winter Garden Theatre, and made a huge star of its leading lady Barbra Streisand. After Babs recreated her performance for the film adaptation and won the Oscar, she and Funny Girl have become totally enmeshed. (Exhibit A: it’s never been revived on Broadway.)
