AMAZING...they don't make 'em like this anymore!

Simply put, one of the best musical performances I've ever seen, and I have seen almost all out there right now! I remember performing this musical back in high school, and this revival tonight had me hooked from beginning to end. If you have any doubt I encourage you to go near the theatre as a performance lets out and just listen to the people RAVE about is as they leave. I heard one woman say walking out "you know I knew all the songs ... read more but I had no idea they were from South Pacific!". That's so telling...Rodgers & Hammerstein's magic comes to life in this revival that I absolutely will remember for a VERY long time. A few things you should know: - The show is sold out or nearly sold out for months...however I went today (a saturday) and used the cancelation line 2 hrs before the show. I went 2 hours before the 2pm matinee and was about to get a ticket..when I heard Kelli O'Hara was off. I then came back for the evening show and unfortunately heard again an understudy would be used (Laura Marie Duncan)...however I got 9th row orchestra center, for face value, and went for it. I do NOT regret it one bit. - The theatre is small but amazing and different from traditional broadway theatres. I really believe almost every seat both in orchestra and in loge was a GREAT seat, the stage is never obstructed. - Cast was amazing....but equalled by the production quality. 30 piece orchestra (absolutely phenomenal), amazing costumes, lighting, sets...giving this all of what it needs to share the honor of being run in the Lincoln Center Theatre. - Don't be dismayed if you feel the audience skews older (i heard a few people in line complain about this)...I am 34, and the evening performance had a number of folks my age and younger...and this musical has such a broad appeal to all ages...even the children in the audience LOVED it. I had read these reviews last night and was happily surprised: 1) the cancelation line worked and I got amazing seats that I can't imagine I would have been able to secure otherwsie and 2) when they say RUN DON'T WALK to this show... and one reviewer "even if you are in town for one night...see this show"....THEY ARE EXACTLY RIGHT. Tho show is already sold out into MARCH 2009 with only a few seats open around Christmas day, but that cancelation line works! Get there early, be patient and respectful, and enjoy! P.S. word to the wise...don't drink a lot before/during the show....the restrooms (both men's and women's) had HUGE HUGE HUGE lines during intermission and I don't think everyone got to go. The first Act is 1 hour 40 minutes...so a lot of people needed to use them. LCT should have opened another set of restrooms!! PLEASE SEE THIS SHOW I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! TRULY ONE OF THE GREATEST BROADWAY MOMENTS FOF MY LIFE! You will leave uplifted, smiling, and wanting to tell everyone you know! THANK YOU SOUTH PACIFIC!

CRAZY FOR THIS SHOW

Absolutely loved South Pacific. The music is some of the best ever in a broadway show. The wonderful Rogers & Hammerstein songs are real classics that live on still. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND seeing this production. Kelli O'Hara was a delight and Paolo Szot was fabulous.

Kids are the best reviewers

I escort a group of 11 year old girls in a theater club to Broadway plays every other month. They have seen South Pacific, Lion King, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, The Little Mermaid, The Fantasticks, and Mary Poppins. Yesterday, I asked them their favorites. This was their answer: They liked South Pacific best, then The Fantasticks, then Lion King. Even kids can pick 'em right!

BEST SHOW YOU WILL EVER SEE !!
Review by: smu, Aug 23, 2008

I have seen the new production of South Pacific at Lincoln Center three times already and may go again. It is that good !! My usual choice of music is hard rock/heavy metal but I also love Broadway. Go figure. Can't understand the last reviewer's negative comments. It boggles the mind. This production is amazing. Terrific cast, great music, great orchestra & not a bad seat in the house. Go see it, you will love it.

Disappointing
Review by: DoReSammi, Aug 16, 2008

I've always loved South Pacific... the songs, the story, everything. So I was THRILLED when it was coming out on Broadway again! However, I was extremely disappointed. It was a very long show, and I lost interest quickly. The songs that should have been lots of fun, like "Honey Bun" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair" were dull. The ensemble was very good, but the leads were disappointing. However, I will say that the scenic design ... read more was incredible.

Go and be enchanted

South Pacific was that best show I have seen in years. Having only seen the movie, I was truly moved by the stage production. I had goosebumps with the first 3 notes of the overture. The music is both haunting and beautiful.. and raucous and irreverent. I LOVED IT. A classic in every way. Do not miss this one.

UNFORGETTABLE

It took 60 years for this revival, but it was worth the wait. So glad Lincoln Center produced this revival. Lincoln Center Productions has always been a class act and it did it again. Bravo. The 30-piece orchestra is worth the price of admission. Don't walk, run. The show IS priceless.

I went to see South Pacific within a group of 8 friends. I had all the music playing in my head and had visions of Mary Martin & Rossano Brazzi from the movie. What a wonderful production! We saw the play with Laurie Marie Duncan playing Nellie Furbush, and must say she was excellent. So glad we got to see Paolo Szot--what a voice and what a gorgeous man! Left with tears in my eyes, as the story was very moving. Had ... read more to buy the soundtrack. Please, go see this wonderful musical--the epitome of a Broadway play.

A rare experience

As a long-time Broadway theatregoer, I have to say this production is among the best I've ever seen. It is lavish in all the right places (stunning lighting design, that 30-piece orchestra, lovely expansive set). Very good choices on musical staging give a natural, guys-fooling-around feeling rather than neat, nifty Broadway-style dancing. So many revivals try to find something new in a show, and in doing so they lose what made the show a ... read more success in the first place. This doesn't do that--it goes for maximum depth in the existing material rather than a strange over-the-top "modern" reading. All the lead performances are exceptional, but Paulo Szot is a revelation. Truth be told, I never liked "South Pacific" much until now. Szot brings a mature tenderness to his role, and suddenly you understand how Emile falls so completely in love with a woman he's only known for two weeks. It's a triumph of musical theatre acting and worthy of every award it's been given. If you love musicals, give yourself the treat of seeing a production that captures the very essence of Rogers and Hammerstein. You may not get this chance again.
